Reclaim Our Spaces

2021-2022

Reclaim Our Spaces was a campaign group which began in 2021 in response to Dublin's dereliction and vacancy epidemic. The Campaign promoted community centered design solutions and urban spaces that respond to the needs of the people that inhabit them.

Key members: Phoebe Moore, Miriam Sweeney and Laoise Tarrant (Lead Designer)

What Could I Be?

A paste-up on the wall of a disused and derelict building on Dublin’s Thomas Street. The paste-up invited passersby to scan a QR code and to input their thoughts as to what they thought the building should be used for. This action marked the first intervention by Reclaim Our Spaces and took place in April 2021.

Dereliction Walking Tour

In October 2021, Reclaim Our Spaces organised a walking tour to 'end dereliction'. The tour aimed to shine a light on the issue of vacancy and dereliction but to also inspire action and hope. The walk featured local artists as well as policy makers and experts in the field of planning and urbanism.

Portobello Timeline

An interactive timeline was created in response to the planning controversies that surrounded Dublin's NYX Hotel in the historic Portobello harbour and square. The timeline featured work by local artists as well as the history of the area from the 19th Century through to the present. As part of the timeline there was a panel for the public to write about what they thought of Portobello and what they saw for its future. The timeline was pinned onto the hoarding of the square in September 2022 on the eve of Dublin’s Culture night.
